December 20, 2009 - Statement of Concern Re: Skyy Country RV Resort
Save Sylvan Lake believes that the Statement of Concern captures many of the lake science and watershed sustainability issues that are not being considered by Lacombe County as it continues to pursue an aggressive plan to urbanize the Sylvan Lake Watershed according to its draft Area Structure Plan. That plan proposes to add up to 8400 dwelling units and 21,000 people to the north and west rim of the lake.
Those who wish to submit a completed Statement of Concern must provide their return mailing address, and sign the last page of their Statement. You are encouraged to write your own specific Statement of Concern or use the one from the web site. All pages should be faxed to the Alberta Environment Office in Red Deer - the number is shown near the top of the first page. You may also wish to send a copy of your statement of concern to your MLA, Government Ministers and the Premier. Additionally, there are letters intended for the Premier and his Minister of Municipal Affairs. It is hoped that receipt of these materials by the Government will ensure that your concerns are broadly understood. According to the Water Act, only affected individuals qualify to submit statements of concern. If you are concerned about water quality at Sylvan Lake and want your voice heard you must complete and submit a statement in your name.
Please feel free to forward this message to other people who enjoy and care about maintaining the quality of Sylvan Lake. Participation in this effort is one of the few remaining avenues of public influence in the approval process for the massive Skyy Country proposal. Lacombe County has passed third reading for this proposal, and it is now up to Provincial departments to ensure that Sylvan Lake’s natural values, including a very desirable water quality, are protected.
October 26, 2009 - Catch and Release Problems
During the spring and summer months the walleye fishing from the platform and along the shoreline on the Town property was phenomenal. However, with this exceptional fishing brought it's problems. One of the major issues was the improper catch and release of the fish by anglers both experienced and inexperienced which resulted in a very large number of dead and dying walleye in the marina. With this constant and flagrant abuse of the resource brought about the following correspondence between Mr. G.B. Lindsay, President MBHOA and Mr. Ted Morton, Minister Sustainable Resourse Development. Letters in PDF (1.56 MB)

July 2, 2009 - Security Issues
If you use the washrooms in the Yacht Club please remember to lock the door to the bathrooms on the lower level as there have been a number of occasions where the door has been left unlocked. We want to ensure these bathrooms stay private as there is an increasing number of anglers this year looking for washrooms.
A small chain with a sign denoting the docks are private has been placed across the walkway to the docks. This has proven to be somewhat helpful in keeping the fishermen off the docks but most times the chain is left dangling rather than attached so in this condition, the chain proves to be useless as a deterrent.
The homeowners and the sailing club members need to be more vigilant with keeping the Yacht Club and the docks more secure.

Another hit on the bio-filter along Highway 11A west of Golf Course Creek. From the images you will notice the bio-filter has not recovered from the excavation of the cattails in the drainage ditch from last March.
Yet again due to potential flooding the ditch was excavated approximately 90 meters in length this spring by the Town of Sylvan Lake. Reduced bio-filter will allow more contaminants from communities and farmland to the west to flow into the marina and the Lake with the spring runoff.
Will there be any restoration of the bio-filter this year by the Town of Sylvan Lake? Stewardship of the Lake rests with all of us.
For more information about the bio-filter destruction from last year please read here.
